Some notes on Antigone

Characters: Oedipus had 4 children with his wife\mother Jocasta. Creon Raised them. He is now the King of Thebes. A civil war breaks out in Thebes and it divided the two brothers.

1. Antigone: A strong willed woman who challenges King Creon.

2. Ismene: Is a loyal adherent of King Creon.

3. Etiocles : A Loyal soldier who defends Thebes & Creon.

4. Polyneices: He Left Thebes for political reasons to form his own rebel army ( in Ar gives) to fight against Creon and Etiocles.

In one particular battle, Argives attacks Thebes and Thebes fights them off and eventually
Argives retreats; However, both Etiocles & Polyneices die on the battle field.

Creon gives Etiocles a proper soldiers burial but makes an edict (law) forbidding anyone to bury Polyneices, under penality of death, because he is a traitor.

Antigone feels strongly that both her brothers deserves a proper burial so their soul will be accepted into heaven and goes against Creon's edict.
