Writing Tip
"Show me, Don’t Tell me"
But what, exactly, are "telling" and "showing?" Telling is another way of saying “summarizing.” Here’s a writer “telling” readers about a room:
"It was a nice room, a warm room. It was a happy place to be." (You just told me, and bored be to death.)
Here is a different writer showing me by using vivid language
"Sunlight pours through the window, pooling on the down comforter which lies across the bed. A block of light also angles across the wall opposite the bed, highlighting the pale orange color of the room. A thick red carpet sprawls over the floor, a corner of it lit too by a sunbeam; the room’s windows admit the sun along two walls, and tiny dust particles hover in the bright streaks which glaze the room."

This map below shows the terrain of the map. Note the mountains between the two towns make it more difficult to build a road. Therfore the road was built around the base of the mountains.

Of Mice and Men - By John Steinbeck
Click here for Of Mice and Men info --->http://www.bookrags.com/notes/omam/SUM.html

Three central themes of this novel are:
1. Lonliness: Lennie and George are migrant workors who travel together working on different ranches throughout the Salinas area.

2. Friendship: Lennie and George have a friendship, which is unusual for migrant workers of the 1930's.
3. Like most Americans, Lennie and George dreamed of a better life for themselves. They worked the ranches in hopes of saving their monies and buying a little place to live of the "fatta the land"
