Three central themes of this novel are:
1. Lonliness: Lennie and George are migrant workors who travel together working on different ranches throughout the Salinas area.

2. Friendship: Lennie and George have a friendship, which is unusual for migrant workers of the 1930's.
3. Like most Americans, Lennie and George dreamed of a better life for themselves. They worked the ranches in hopes of saving their monies and buying a little place to live of the "fatta the land"
